Overview

In this video series, Flash trainer Craig Campbell spends over 9 hours walking you through the basics of the most exciting release of Flash to date. In this series, you'll learn how to draw, animate, and build a basic website using Flash. You'll also learn how to incorporate sound and video into your Flash files.

Detailed Video Descriptions

Part 1 - Introduction (Running Time - 1:04)

  2 - Startup Screen (Running Time - 8:10)
The startup screen is the first thing you see when you open up Flash. This video gives you a tour of all the options available on this screen.

  3 - The Workspace (Running Time - 6:22)
Since you'll spend almost 100% of your Flash development time in the Flash workspace, it's rather crucial that you understand how to get around. In this video, Craig walks you through Flash's authoring environment.

  4 - Panels (Running Time - 8:26)
Most of the tasks you'll need to do in Flash can be found in some sort of panel. Panels group together common work tasks to make development a little easier. In this video, you'll learn how panels work, how to rearrange panels, how to open up new panels, and how to save your panel layouts.

Part 2 - Drawing in Flash (Running Time - 0:33)

5 - Oval and Rect Tools (Running Time - 11:32)
It's finally time to start drawing. In this video, Craig will walk you through using the oval tool and the rectangle tool to create basic shapes on the stage. You'll also learn a little about the basics behind strokes and fills.

  6 - PolyStar Tool (Running Time - 8:01)
The PolyStar tool allows you to make polygons and stars with as many sides or points as you want. In this video, Craig shows you the basics of using this tool.

  7 - Object Drawing Mode (Running Time - 7:22)
In older versions of Flash, shapes were very volatile. If two shapes on the same layer overlapped each other, they would actually cut chunks out of each other. Flash 8, on the other hand, now has object drawing mode, which allows you to create a shape as a self-contained object that won't interfere with other objects.

  8 - The Line Tool (Running Time - 6:43)
As you might have guessed, the line tool allows you to draw straight lines in Flash. In this video, you'll learn the ins and outs of using this simple tool.

9 - The Pencil and Brush Tools (Running Time - 7:29)
The pencil and brush tools are both freeform drawing tools, but they're a little different. The pencil tool, for example, draws a stroke onto the stage, while the brush tool draws using a fill. In this video, Craig will show you how to use these tools and explain the differences.

  10 - The Pen Tool (Running Time - 4:35)
The pen tool is another tool for drawing using strokes, but it's quite a bit more complicated in that it requires a basic understanding of bezier curves. In this tutorial, Craig shows you how it works.

11 - Ink Bottle and Paint Bucket Tools (Running Time - 6:47)
The ink bottle and paint bucket tools allow you to add or alter the color of strokes and fills for your shapes. In this video, Craig will illustrate the use of these tools and their various options.

  12 - Stroke Options (Running Time - 13:59)
How complicated can a simple stroke be? Well, in this tutorial, you'll figure that out. Craig will walk you through the various stroke options, many of which are new to Flash 8.

  13 - The Eraser Tool (Running Time - 12:43)
The eraser tool, though it seems like it would be pretty straightforward, has a few options that make it really powerful. In this video, Craig will walk you through the various options available with the eraser tool.

  14 - The Text Tool (Running Time - 17:25)
In this video, Craig walks you through the numerous options for creating and modifying static text fields in Flash, including font choice, color, alignment, anti-aliasing, and much more.

  15 - The Selection Tool (Running Time - 17:57)
The selection tool is probably the tool you'll be using the most as you work in Flash, so it's highly important to understand how to use it. In this video, Craig will give you an overview of its use, and he'll show you a few handy keyboard shortcuts that will save you a lot of time.

  16 - The Subselection Tool (Running Time - 7:29)
The subselection tool is a little more complicated than the selection tool. The subselection tool allows you to edit a shape using its vector points and bezier curve handles.

  17 - The Lasso Tool (Running Time - 4:52)
Our third selection tool, the lasso tool, is more of a freeform selection tool that allows you to select shapes or parts of shapes. In this video, Craig will show you how to use it.

18 - The Free Transform Tool (Running Time - 10:36)
In this video, Craig will show you how to resize, rotate, skew, and distort your shapes using the free transform tool.

  19 - The Transform Panel (Running Time - 4:24)
The transform panel allows you to fine-tune some of your transformations, and it also allows you to perform the same transformation multiple times.

  20 - Transforming Text (Running Time - 4:23)
Transforming text sometimes requires some extra steps, and in this video, you'll learn how to do what's necessary in order to do that.

  21 - Arranging Shapes (Running Time - 4:31)
When you create more than one shape on the stage, and those shapes are overlapping, naturally one of the shapes is going to obscure the other. In this video, Craig will show you how to change the stacking order of your shapes so you can control which shape is on top.

22 - The Hand and Zoom Tools (Running Time - 4:33)
In the "view" section of your Flash toolbar, there are two tools that allow you to modify your view of the Flash stage. In this video, Craig will show you how to use the hand tool and the zoom tool, and then he'll show you how to use them without ever clicking on the actual tools themselves.

  23 - Aligning Shapes (Running Time - 14:00)
When drawing multiple shapes such as menu buttons on your stage, it's sometimes necessary to do a little alignment work. In this video, Craig illustrates the use of the Alignment Panel in Flash to simplify this task.

  24 - The Color Selector (Running Time - 8:38)
Though it may seem simple, there's a lot more to the color selector than just choosing a color from the pallette. There are multiple ways you can choose your desired color, and in this video, Craig will show you how.

25 - The Color Swatches Panel (Running Time - 6:25)
If you have certain colors that you plan on using often, you can add those colors to your color swatches using the menus in the color swatches panel. This video illustrates the use of this panel in detail.

26 - The Color Mixer Panel (Running Time - 2:46)
The color mixer panel is another means of selecting and working with colors in Flash. In this video, Craig shows you what you can do with this panel.

  27 - Gradients (Running Time - 15:01)
A gradient is a fill that fades from one color to another. In this video, you'll learn all the basics you need to know about gradients and about how to use them in Flash.

  28 - Working with Layers (Running Time - 15:18)
Layers allow you to separate, organize, and arrange the stacking order of your content on the stage. In this video, Craig shows you how to create, delete, rename, edit, group, hide, and lock layers in Flash.

29 - How to Draw in Flash (Running Time - 17:53)
We've now covered all the drawing tools in Flash, so it's time to make a little creative application. In this video, Craig will put these tools to practical use as he shows you how to create a glossy, reflective logo.

30 - Drawing with the Transform Panel (Running Time 10:48)
In this video, Craig demonstrates how to create shapes with circular repeating patterns, such as gears, flowers, and suns, using the drawing tools and the transform panel.

  31 - Importing Images (Running Time - 3:00)
Importing images into Flash is a very simple process, and in this video, Craig will show you how to import a stand-alone image as well as a sequence of images.

  32 - Masks (Running Time - 8:37)
A mask is a way of revealing and hiding certain parts of a layer. In this video, you'll learn more about what exactly a mask is as well as how to create a mask in Flash.

Part 3 - Animating With Flash (Running Time - 6:50)

  34 - Frame-by-frame Animation (Running Time - 16:44)
A frame-by-frame animation, as its name implies, requires the animator to illustrate every single frame of an animation. It can be a tedious process, but sometimes it's required. In this video, Craig illustrates the process for creating frame-by-frame animations and gives you some helpful tips on optimizing this experience.

  35 - Motion Tween Animations (Running Time - 8:26)
Motion tweens are a Flash animator's best friend. With a motion tween, you can significantly reduce the amount of time it takes to create an animation. In this video, Craig shows you how.

  36 - Tweening Shape Properties (Running Time - 7:00)
Motion tweens are not used solely for moving an object from one place to another. They can also be used to fade in an object or to change an object's colors.

  37 - Shape Tweens (Running Time - 11:15)
Shape Tweens allow you to morph one shape into another shape in Flash. Craig talks about how to create shape tweens as well as how to use Shape Hints to customize the way your shapes morph.

  38 - Motion Guides (Running Time - 11:05)
A motion guide allows you to create a motion tween that follows a custom path that you create yourself. In this video, Craig will show you how to use motion guides to create an airplane animation.

  39 - Easing (Running Time - 7:46)
Easing is a way to alter the speed of an animation so that it starts out slow and then speeds up or vice versa. In this video, Craig will show you how to make your animations more interesting by easing into and out of them.

  40 - Multiple Tweens (Running Time - 7:54)
If you want to create multiple motion tweens in Flash at the same times, you'll probably run into some problems if you don't know what you're doing. In this video, Craig shows you a very important tip for creating multiple tweens.

  41 - Animating Text (Running Time - 9:25)
You might find yourself wanting to animate text quite a bit in Flash, so in this video, Craig shares some tips for creating high quality text animations quickly and efficiently.

  42 - Mask Animations (Running Time - 12:29)
There are two different kinds of mask animations: an animation where the mask itself moves, and an animation where something moves behind, or within, a mask. In this video, Craig illustrates both of these methods.

Part 4 - Working With Symbols (Running Time - 10:43)

44 - Graphic Symbols vs Movie Clip Symbols (Running Time - 8:41)
Graphic symbols and movie clip symbols have a lot in common, but they also have some major differences. This video discusses the major differences between graphic symbol and movie clip symbol behaviors.

  45 - Graphic Symbol Options (Running Time - 11:49)
In this video, we look at graphic symbols a little more in depth as we discuss creating an animation of a bird flapping its wings.

  46 - Multilayered Animation (Running Time - 6:53)
Symbols can be placed within other symbols, and in this video, Craig will illustrate how to create a multilayered animation using this technique.

  47 - Button Symbols (Running Time - 5:55)
Button symbols behave a little differently than graphic and movie clip symbols. In this video, Craig will demonstrate how to create a button that changes color when the user hovers over it and moves down a little bit when clicked.

  48 - Invisible Buttons (Running Time - 3:46)
Invisible buttons are a great tool for creating clickable hotspots in Flash. In this video, Craig shows you how to create a clickable region of an image using an invisible button.

  49 - Animated Buttons (Running Time - 5:47)
In a button symbol, you only have one frame available to you in the "over" state. But what if you wanted to create an animation that occurs when the user hovers the button? In this video, you'll learn how.

  50 - Filters (Running Time - 12:55)
Filters are a new feature of Flash Professional 8. For the first time, you can very easily create drop shadows, blurs, glows, and other filters for your movie clips, buttons, and text fields, and in this video, Craig will show you how.

  51 - Tweening Filters (Running Time - 3:16)
If you want to fade an image onto the stage, you can make it a little more interesting if you start off blurry and fade into focus.

  52 - Blending Modes (Running Time - 6:22)
Blending Modes allow you to blend overlapping colors in interesting ways, and in this video, Craig will show you the ins and outs of using Blending Modes in Flash.

Part 5 - Sound And Video (Running Time - 0:24)

  53 - Importing Sound (Running Time - 11:34)
One of the great features of Flash is its ability to work with sound. In this video, Craig teaches the basics of creating button clicks and background music in Flash.

  54 - Importing Video (Running Time - 8:13)
You'll be shocked to learn how simple it can be to include videos in your Flash files. In this video, Craig will demonstrate how to import, encode, and embed videos into your Flash project.

Part 6 - Using Actionscript In Flash (Running Time - 0:26)

  55 - Your First Action (Running Time - 11:53)
We've created several animations so far, and we've discovered that all animations loop over and over by default. In this video, we'll get started with Actionscript by telling those animations to stop looping.

  56 - Button Actions (Running Time - 14:09)
As you can imagine, if you plan on creating any interactivity whatsoever for your Flash website, you'll need to learn how to create interactivity for your buttons. In this video, Craig will show you how to create a button that actually responds when you click on it.

  57 - Building a Simple Website (Running Time - 13:27)
In this video, Craig will demonstrate how to use the gotoAndStop method to create a simple, four-page website in Flash.

  58 - Animated Transitions (Running Time - 9:42)
In this video, Craig takes our new website one step further by creating animated transitions between the pages of your website. Instead of just showing up when a button is clicked, the new page will fade in with a quick motion tween.

  59 - Labeled Frames (Running Time - 6:04)
When you make changes to your website and start shifting frames around, you'll discover that some of your "goto" actions start taking you to frames that you don't want Flash to go to. A very effective way of getting around this is to label your frames and then refer to those labels in your "goto" commands.

  60 - Adding Button Actions to a Frame (Running Time - 12:39)
In order to make a button interactive, you can add actionscript to the button itself OR to the frame where the button resides. In this video, Craig will show you how to keep all your actionscript in one central location by adding your code to the frame where the button resides.

  61 - The One-Frame Website (Running Time - 9:29)
In this video, you'll create a one-frame website by putting all of the website content inside a movie clip and then pointing to that movie clip to tell it which page to go to.

Part 7 - Publishing Your Files (Running Time - 8:27)

In this video, Craig covers the basics of publishing your Flash files and explains which files need to be uploaded to your web server in order to go live with your website.

Part 8 - Conclusion (Running Time - 0:34)

Stop settling for $500 to $1000 web design projects and start making some real money. More importantly, start building a real business. You know, the kind that will allow you to take some time off and still have money coming in. The kind of business where you are building an asset that can be sold at some point in the future.

If you are tired of working long hours grinding away in front the computer just to make the same money as a Starbucks barista, then you will be very interested in the following information.

Each week I host a webinar where I show designers the exact skills you need to develop to take your business to the next level. For some, that means being able to go from part-time to full-time. How nice would it be to trade in your day job for a successful business where you call the shots. For others that is means getting your very first client.

I even show the pros how to grow their business. Just last week we had a guy that fit in that top 1% category. He is charging $30,000, on the low end, for a website. He was making more money than almost all of the other 22 attendees combined.

I opened his eyes to some new ideas, one of which has the potential to double his already successful business. That is the thing about the top 1% - they are always anxious to learn something new. He could have easily passed on the opportunity to attend the webinar based on his success, but there he was soaking up new ideas to grow his business.

How To Attend The Webinar

The webinar is a 2 hour presentation plus a live Q and A session. Most of these sessions last over three hours.

We use Webex to facilitate the webinars. This allows you to watch and listen to the live presentation via the web. We use the chat feature to create a very interactive experience. I am constantly asking questions and polling the audience. This has resulted in some great sessions allowing you to learn from other attendees also.
